Sold-out fundraiser supports arts education for young people

Arts Umbrella – Canada’s leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing arts education and training for young people – raised $1.75 million for youth arts education at the 42nd annual Splash Art Auction, hosted at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on October 5. Presented by Nicola Wealth, the sold-out event attracted 550 guests, and saw Dana Claxton’s LED firebox, Headdress – Shadae and her Girlz going for a record amount of $105,000.

Splash is Arts Umbrella’s signature fundraiser with proceeds supporting scholarships, bursaries and programming for young people in Metro Vancouver and across Canada. Hosted by the dynamic duo of Gloria Macarenko and Fred Lee, the evening was a celebration of the arts and an opportunity to champion its importance in our communities. Attendees enjoyed captivating student performances, delicious food and cocktails, and an exceptionally curated art auction.

The Splash 2024 Collection featured 90 art pieces by established and emerging Canadian artists such as Dana Claxton, Marie Khouri, Douglas Coupland, Graham Gillmore, Maru Aponte, Ron Moppett, Andy Dixon, Shuvinai Ashoona and Meryl McMaster. Among the attendees were featured artists, Valerie Raynard, Douglas Coupland, Gabryel Harrison, Marleen Vermeulen, Athena Bax, Dana Claxton, Jolinda Linden, Jesse Brillon, Maru Aponte, Kevin Boyle, and Andrew Dadson.

"We are grateful to the artists who donated their works to the Splash 2024 Art Auction, as well as the local arts community for continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of children and youth,” said Paul Larocque, President & CEO, Arts Umbrella. “With an astounding $1.75 million raised, we can continue to provide accessible arts education for any young person with a passion for visual and performing arts, regardless of their economic or social circumstance.”

Since its inception in 1982, Splash has championed the belief that art is a powerful catalyst for positive change in children's lives, instilling lifelong qualities such as self-confidence, courage, and creative expression.
